A very productive day spent decorating the bar and dining room area yesterday getting ready for our tenant Open Day later this month. The search for a tenant continues – so please let anyone know that may be interested in running our beautiful community pub!
Three years ago today saw our wonderful victory at Dover District Council when Councillors voted to prevent the house conversion in favour of locals purchasing the pub.
Since then, our Society commenced a journey to develop a sound business plan and strategy calendar, to raise the necessary funds to purchase the pub, and to restore it to its original function and standing in the community. Three years on we are very proud to have achieved this, and we look forward in finding a tenant soon.
The Chequer Inn is without doubt a beautiful and characterful building, which possesses some important historical features, but its listed status has given us a headache because anything we do, except like for like repairs, are subject to listed building consent.
We are now hoping to start more extensive building work and this weekend we have received the good news that Dover District Council have accepted our Planning Application for an extension to build a disabled toilet, internal renovations on the first floor living accommodation, as well as the kitchen and access to the cellar.
We would like to thank all villagers and supporters for their time on the councils planning portal to provide them with the information needed to help make the decision. We look forward to updating you all with building work progress over the next few weeks!
Our garden Volunteers hard at work at the Chequer Inn community pub, transforming the garden before Winter sets in. Many thanks to all who have given up their free time to volunteer with our project so far.
Some lovely footage of our Pop-Up Pub event last weekend. Thanks to everyone that attended and also to everyone working hard behind the scenes to make it happen! A fantastic day despite all the heavy rain. Lots of visitors throughout the day and everything sold out!
Thanks to GADDS’ Ramsgate Brewery for the beer and to James for the delicious hog roast. Let’s hope that we can find our tenant soon so that events like these can happen all the time and the Chequers can open its doors everyday!
